Every company has its story and RJM Corporation is no exception. An engineer with a vision and a great deal of tenacity launched this company in 1977 with $1,000 and a trusty (albeit, rusty) old van. No time to fuss with a company name, he simply used his initials. His name is Richard J. Monro. He was a leader, steeped with entrepreneurial spirit. In his teens and still a little wet behind the ears, he started his own marine salvage company. Within 2 years he had six divers and 2 salvage tugs under contract, plus a lucrative contract from a maritime insurance company. Fearless? Yes. Reckless? No. He simply had infinite belief in himself and what he could do. So he did it. Rich (as everyone calls him) moved on to graduate at the head of his class with a degree in engineering at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He furthered his education in Columbia University’s Mechanical Engineering Masters Program and later obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration from Iona College. During graduate school, Rich chose to pursue a career as a combustion specialist engineer, “paying his dues” by working at a number of different combustion-oriented companies to better learn his chosen field. He built a reputation for himself as a “new thinker” -- a person who looked at problems as opportunities for creating new, often cutting edge solutions. And that’s what brought Rich to start RJM Corporation. Typical of so many hard working engineers in their early 30s, the family was growing, money was tight, responsibilities were huge. But Rich had a vision. Undaunted, he set out to fulfill his destiny. It all didn’t start with a bang. He had to make do with limited resources. A second child forced RJM “operations” out of the spare bedroom in the apartment he lived in. So a lean-to shed behind the landlord’s garage became the new RJM office space. There were no facilities in that shed. Just a second hand desk, a phone line and a propane heater to help him weather New England winters. It certainly wasn’t fancy. Just practical. |

That was all Rich needed to pursue his vision. Focused on research and development for the utility industry, Rich invented a new process for improving the cycle efficiency of steam power plants. And RJM Corporation was on its way. R&D contracts started coming in on a regular basis offering lots of opportunities for Rich’s creative “new thinking” to find just the right solutions for utilities across the country. Rich attracted like-minded entrepreneurial engineers to work with him. They all were “new thinkers.” This team expanded the creation of innovative and practical new energy technologies upon which RJM Corporation has built its reputation over the years. This was the beginning of RJM’s impressive patent portfolio. In 1981 the lean-to was abandoned amid great fanfare for the company had just moved into proper offices complete with an R&D lab. Staff had been added as well. The company prospered and grew. |
